The Benefit of eBooks in Education
The popularity of eBooks has grown over the last several years, and is continuing to grow rapidly as more and more books become available. What is so attractive about this particular form of media? Why are more people turning to eBooks than ever before? There are many benefits of using eBooks, some of which will be explored below.

Cost Effective

In most cases, eBooks are far more reasonable than their printed counterparts. Often, books are subjected to damage that is irreparable and costly. With eBooks, the price is right and vandalism is not a problem. When teachers need to use a particular text for note taking, etc., the pages needed can simply be printed out and reproduced.

Sustainable

Our current social climate is calling for all things sustainable, and eBooks certainly prevent the unnecessary killing of trees for the sake of textbooks. Over time, as the use of eBooks becomes more widespread, more and more readers will grow used to the format and our relationship with the text itself will change.

Media of Choice for Millennials

Most students in elementary and middle school right now have grown up with computers and the internet. That being said, most kids these days are completely comfortable using the computer for all of their information, not just articles from Google. Using a medium that the youth is familiar with not only works with building upon prior knowledge, but additional resources for enrichment and development of knowledge are at their fingertips as well.

More on the Way

As the popularity of eBooks grows, many publishers are deciding to make their wares available online as well. As it stands, many texts have already been scanned and uploaded from libraries all over the world. Texts over one hundred years old, like Bram Stoker's Dracula have been available online for years.

The Obvious Choice

Technological advances are constantly coming down the pipeline. Most cell phones now can do more and store more information at a faster speed than most desktop computers from a decade ago could. It is only a matter of time before the marriage between technology and educational resources come together.

Strategies to Market Education
By Kelly Kilpatrick

It’s a dog eat dog world out there, with educational institutes vying for a piece of the student pie. The top ones that are well established have no issues, well not if you consider having to turn down a million or so applications, but the ones that are just starting to make a name for themselves must try to carve a name for themselves before they actually taste success. And to this end, there are certain strategies that they could adopt to get on the road to popularity, with both the critics and the students:

• Quality speaks for itself: The first and foremost focus of any educational institute must lie in providing quality education, and for this, they need to employ teachers who are both good at what they do and have a passion for the job. Quality is one quality that needs no advertisement – it speaks for itself. Word of mouth endorsement from past students and reviews from standard bodies are slow but steady ways to increase your popularity.

• Websites and blogs help: A presence on the World Wide Web is more of a necessity than an option these days, what with every institution worth its salt getting online to enhance its visible profile. Get on as many search engine listings as you can and keep your blogs informative and engaging.

• Offer online courses: With more and more people interested in pursuing both a career and an education, it’s important that you have good online offerings to satisfy their needs.

• Attract foreign students: Learners from overseas form a large part of the American educational system. It’s a mutually advantageous relationship – they get the quality education they’re looking for while you get the promotional mileage you want. Take steps to increase your visibility in countries like India and China from where most of the foreign student population originates.

• Invest in transnational education: If resources permit, set up centers of learning in foreign countries using tie ups with local governments and private or public institutions. This increases your visibility on a global basis.

Excellent eBooks with a novel approach

'A Class Apart' by Alec Klein. In "A Class Apart", Alec Klein isn't only recounting the saga of one semester in this prestigious one hundred and three year-old New York City public high school, that is noted not only for its academic excellence in the sciences and mathematics, but truly, for having had such a profound impact on American intellectual life in everything from politics and law to literature and the performing arts. Klein's representation of Stuyvesant as a hotbed of intellectual activity, where the students excel and the teachers encourage, is certainly not false. But it is extremely narrow. Klein writes of the spattering of advanced math and science courses; the exemplary English classes; the self-sacrificing and highly dedicated teachers; the student who brings a textbook to Senior Prom. He writes of the students and parents who fret over grades of 98 and 97, and the intense competition to get into highly coveted colleges. To his credit, Klein has no pretenses that all the students at Stuyvesant are extraordinarily gifted. Klein captured the incredible collection of moving parts beautifully, and his largely gentle treatment of the students made for a truly warm read.

'The Mislabeled Child:' by Brock & Fernette Eide. The Eides take a new and refreshing approach to many of the concerns and challenges that impact our children's ability to learn. Informative and well documented, this eBook is appropriate for anyone involved with children, including parents, teachers, therapists, and physicians. On the back cover is a quote from Paul Beljan, president , American Board of Pediatric Neuropsychology where he states : "This is the kind of book that parent's will want to keep out and refer to again and again. This book provides a comprehensive, commonsense and scientifically insightful overview of the causes and behaviors associated with a number of learning problems." That say's it right there. Good and educational read! Use the Coupon code below to receive a Discount on either of these two eBooks.

Recommended eBooks About Education

'TABE Test Of Adult Basic Education' by Phyllis Dutwin. I recommend this book for someone who does not have time to take a remedial English class. This eBook is a great tool for study. I do agree it is "the First Step to Lifelong Success" as a student and for any professional. I believe that adults need a refresher course from time to time no matter what profession they are in. GED students will most likely be familiar to the TABE tests because it is used to help the teacher locate the grade level of the student through the test scores. They help the student by the practice of taking tests. This is a eBook designed to help the student improve their skills by taking the TABE test.

'Getting Started with English Language Learners' by Judie Haynes. Getting Started with English Language Learners is especially valuable for educators who are new to the ESL field yet recommended to ESL teachers of all experience levels. These assessments should provide teachers with a realistic picture of what individual ELLs can do without focusing unduly on what they can't do." From basic concepts of second-language acquisition theory, to the best way to handle newcomers' first weeks of school, to differentiating instruction for English language learners, programs for English language learners, and more, Getting Started with English Language Learners is a top-quality resource. Check You're Self, Before You Reck You're Self

'The Cure for the Common School' by Lee Ognibene. Reading THE CURE FOR THE COMMON SCHOOL feels far more like being in conversation with an inspired and inspiring teacher than it does reading a typical text on theoretical pedagogy. This book takes one through his time tested method of whole teaching and motivational techniques for today's students of all ages. This very readable eBook will make your face (and heart) light up too.

'Experience And Education' by John Dewey. Very useful and informative eBook. Dewey set some of the philosophical standards of education in our country. Like it or not, the information is, like so much of philosophy, opinion based. This is a great book about education in the United States and World. I highly recommend it. It illustrates many shortcomings in modern education because of governmental, parental and teacher input error. A must read for all. As always… Use the Coupon Code below for a Discount on either of these two eBook Titles.

The Cure for the Common School (Adobe Reader) eBook edition by Ognibene, Lee

Poetry Comes In Many Forms... Music....Latin...

'Beginning Latin Poetry' by Gavin Betts & Daniel Franklin. The plentiful notes are quite helpful and aid the reader in terms of vocabulary, syntax, and understanding the content. There is also a glossary at the end of the book containing presumably all the words that occur in the text. The selections on the whole look like they'll will make worthwhile reading from the point of view of content. There are some "essays" explaining Roman books, how editing Latin texts is done, and other topics of likely interest to readers, though some of the comments are a bit quaint. Overall though, the book is highly recommended!

'2007-2008 Annual Supplement to The Piano Book' by Larry Fine. This book is meant to be a supplement to Larry Fine's other book, "The Piano Book." It contains up-to-date information about expected price ranges for all models and all sizes of all brands of pianos (both grands and uprights). It is very, very helpful and can help you negotiate a price with a pushy salesperson. I would recommend that you purchase this eBook along with the most recent edition for the most complete information, but this supplement alone could still be helpful. Check below for the Coupon Code so you can receive a Discount on either of these two eBook Titles.

Study Where To Study.... uh?

'Students' Guide to Colleges:'by Jordan Goldman, Colleen Buyers. I think it's really indicative of what makes this book great. There's just tons of new ideas in it, things you won't find in any other guide, and you can really tell the makers put a lot of time and thought into figure out how to make this whole college search process easier. It is just as (if not more) informative as the other guides - but then it's also fun to read, and tells you what the other guides don't, like "What would a prospective student not see on a campus tour", and "what wouldn't an admissions officer tell a prospective college student." I can't recommend this book enough!! I have a ton of friends and relatives who I have recommended this book to and they thank me all the time! That's my kind of eBook.

'MCAT Physics' by Garrett Biehle. The MCAT Physics Book is a wonderful tool in helping prospective medical students achieve high scores on the Physical Sciences section of the MCAT. The thoroughness of the topics covered and the quality of the questions make this book very valuable. Buy this book early and give yourself time to work through it -- you will end up feeling very comfortable in the physical sciences test. I wish the author would write a similar book for every other MCAT subject, but I guess we can't get everything that we want! Educate Your Language, And You're Hacking Skills

'The Bilingual Edge' by Kendall King. I found this eBook an excellent discussion about why, when and how to teach your child a second language. The authors, who are both academicians and mothers of young children, guide the reader through a very complete and empirically-based discussion, but it feels like they are sitting in your living room and chatting over coffee. The tone of this book is very friendly and the authors really make the reader feel like he/she could pull off the feat of giving a young child the gift of bilingualism! Where was this book when my kids were mere babes?
'CEH: Official Certified Ethical Hacker Review Guide: Exam 312-50' by Kimberly Graves. This book is a perfect review for people who are knowledgeable on the subject of ethical hacking, desire certification, and want that last minute review and prep guide before going in for the exam. It is cost effective and to the point! Many guides already exist to teach the subject of ethical hacking. This official guide sums up exactly (and only) the CEH exam objectives as presented by EC-Council and provides practice tests. Studiers can rapidly recognize areas they need more focus on before testing. Use the Coupon Code below to receive a discount on these two eBook Titles!

Call Me Gene (eBook Edition)

The best thing about my job is that I now get paid for doing what I have always done – reading. All my life people have been handing me books saying “You have to read this.” And mostly I have ‘cause I love to read. Then I got into publishing and people started “handing me books” by mail and these days by email. How cool is that!

Last week a woman by the name of Celeste Bailey sent me an email telling me about her books on genetics: Call Me Gene. She even sent me a copy to read.

I have had special interest in genetics since the day I tried explaining hereditary traits to a very precocious seven year old.

She listened to my explanation very carefully. You could almost see the wheels turning in that little brain. After a moment she said. “Well, I think I have more of my Daddy’s genes than my Mommy's”. She was quiet for a moment and then added “But I’m not bald.”

Right then and there I decided that I should probably stick to reading and not try to be a teacher!

Fortunately, there are people in this world who are teachers. They seem to have a gift for making complex information simple and interesting! Celeste Bailey and her sister Lucy Eskeland are two of them.

Call Me Gene is quite literally fun! Yes, it is a kid’s book, aimed at 7th and 8th graders but I actually leaned a couple of things I didn’t know.

The graphics are great – simple, colorful and informative. By the time I was done, I had refreshed my knowledge about basic genetics, cell structure, cell reproduction, Mendel's heredity experiments, and dominant and recessive genes. The discussion on mutant genes and cloning was well written. You may or may not agree with their opinion about human cloning, but I do applaud them for at least addressing it.

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in genetics from the precocious seven year to her grandparents; and of course, her teachers.

Here’s the official stuff:

Call Me Gene-Third Edition is a science book describing the genetic code and the scientific advances in biotechnology. The book is appropriate for late elementary/middle-school students, either in the classroom or home school. The book is written in a narrative and easy-to-read approach. There are numerous colorful illustrations throughout the book.

"There is grandeur in this view of life....". Charles Darwin

Alec Klein's book takes a local and personal look at one of the nation's leading public schools for the gifted and talented. Observations witnessed at Stuyvesant to the nation at large, Klein chooses, instead, to focus on a few of the people who make this school exceptional. This book is an effortless read that offers personal and caring insight into the passions of learning and teaching. A Class Apart is a quintessentially American story! Books of baseball wisdom are not unique - but this book is one-of-a-kind. The On Deck Circle of Life is a great read, one that I think is "So Cool." Dr. Rotbart's experience as a pediatrician and as a coach is evident on every page - he writes in an easy to understand, gentle style that kids and their parents will love. Be sure to check below to receive your coupon code for a discount on these two eBooks.

A Class Apart eBook edition by Klein, Alec

Enter Stuyvesant High, one of the most extraordinary schools in America, a place where the brainiacs prevail and jocks are embarrassed to admit they play on the woeful football team. Academic competition is so intense that students say they can have only two of these three things: good grades, a social life, or sleep. About one in four Stuyvesant students gains admission to the Ivy League. And the school's alumni include several Nobel laureates, Academy Award winners, and luminaries in the arts, business, and public service. A Class Apart follows the lives of Stuyvesant's remarkable students, such as Romeo, the football team captain who teaches himself calculus and strives to make it into Harvard; Jane, a world-weary poet at seventeen, battling the demon of drug addiction; Milo, a ten-year-old prodigy trying to fit in among high-school students who are literally twice his size; Mariya, a first-generation American beginning to resist parental pressure for ever-higher grades so that she can enjoy her sophomore year. And then there is the faculty, such as math chairman Mr. Jaye, who is determined not to let bureaucratic red tape stop him from helping his teachers. He even finds a job for a depressed math genius who lacks a college degree but possesses the gift of teaching. This is the story of the American dream, a New York City school that inspires immigrants to come to these shores so that their children can attend Stuyvesant in the first step to a better life. It's also the controversial story of elitism in education. Stuyvesant is a public school, but children must pass a rigorous entrance exam to get in. Only about 3 percent do so, which, Stuyvesant students and faculty point out, makes admission to their high school tougher than to Harvard. On the eve of the hundredth anniversary of Stuyvesant's first graduating class, reporter Alec Klein, an alumnus, was given unfettered access to the school and the students and faculty who inhabit it. What emerges is a book filled with stunning, raw, and heartrending personalities, whose stories are hilarious, sad, and powerfully moving.

eBooks that feature Teachers and Cats

eBooks are a wonderful invention for students, teachers and parent. This week we celebrate teachers with Jonathan Kozol's compilation of Francesca's letters. They remind us that Teachers have tremendous chanlleges and awesome opportunities. On the lighter side we showcase the perfect "story hour" book. Kids are sure to love all of the books in Erin Hunter's Warrior Series.

Letters to A Young Teacher by Kozol, Jonathon

“In lovingly supportive letters to a young woman on her first job as a first grade teacher, Kozol brings us heartwarming stories of the magic of kids who delight in words like ‘wiggly’ and ‘wobbly,’ ‘bamboozle’ and ‘persnickety’–and who could resist a child called Pineapple? This remarkable book is a testament to teachers who not only respect and advocate for children on a daily basis but who are the necessary guardians of the spirit. Every citizen who cares about the future of our children ought to read this.” –Eric Carle, author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar

“What a wonderful book! Anyone who cares about rebuilding our public education system should read it. I could not put it down!” –Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education, Stanford University

“This book cuts to the heart of the matter of what it means to be a teacher today. The truth about testing, vouchers and their impact on public schools–it’s all captured here. But here, too, we also experience the exhilaration of putting together lesson plans, the joys of comforting children, and the anxiety of a teacher’s first days in school. Francesca’s journey will leave you hopeful for our nation’s children.” –Reg Weaver, President, National Education Association

“Jonathan Kozol’s advice to the teacher Francesca shows all the qualities that make him the nation’s wisest and boldest and most clear-headed writer on education: his passion for teaching, his respect for students, his refusal to submit to the stifling demands of the educational bureaucrats in and out of government. He tells personal classroom stories with a refreshing honesty, and conveys the excitement and joy of preparing a new generation to remake the world. Teachers, students, parents alike will find this book inspiring.” –Howard Zinn, author of A People’s History of the United States

“With Letters to a Young Teacher, Jonathan Kozol reminds us that teaching remains a wonderful and essential calling. Committed, gifted teachers who recognize the 'inherent value' of every child are needed now more than ever. I hope this inspiring book will spark a new generation of teacher-leaders heeding Kozol's passionate call and example.” –Marian Wright Edelman, President, Children's Defense Fund
